It's that time of year again—fall in Utah is an absolute spectacle. The vibrant colors, crisp air, and breathtaking landscapes make it the perfect season to get out and capture the beauty of autumn. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or just someone looking for that perfect shot, fall in Utah Valley offers some of the best locations for those must-have seasonal photos. To help you check off your fall photography bucket list, we've rounded up some of the top spots and ideal times for catching the peak foliage.
Maples vs. Aspens: Leaf Colors Based on Tree Species
Before we dive into the locations, it’s helpful to know when and where you’ll find the best colors. Typically, maples change earlier in the season, with their leaves showing brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows by early to mid-fall. Aspens, on the other hand, tend to turn a bit later, towards mid-to-late fall, offering stunning golden yellows. Timing your shoots right can be tricky, but we’ve got you covered.
1. Kyhv Peak
~September 15th - 29th
For early fall adventurers, Kyhv Peak is a must-see. The views from here are unparalleled, especially when the valley below is painted in fall’s first brilliant hues. This spot is perfect for those seeking panoramic shots of fall colors. We recommend taking Kyhv Peak Road for some of the best vistas, but be aware that it’s a dirt road that can get rocky. The road typically closes in October due to weather, so plan your visit early in the season. If you’re chasing golden hour shots, this is an incredible place to catch the sunset.
2. Great Western Trailhead
~September 27th - October 2nd
Located near Vivian Park, this trailhead offers a blend of beauty and seclusion. The drive along South Fork Road is gorgeous. Once you reach the trailhead you can snap some shots from the parking lot or there is a short walk up the trail and you'll find yourself in a scenic field—a prime spot for those golden hour shots. Just make sure to stay on public property and respect the nearby private ranches.
3. Big Springs Park
~September 27th - October 2nd
Another gem along South Fork Road, Big Springs Park is ideal for family photo sessions. You won’t need to hike far to find a great backdrop, making it perfect for families with young kids. While this spot is equally beautiful during golden hour, keep in mind that the sun sets earlier here due to the canyon’s angles, so plan your timing accordingly.
4. Vivian Park
~October 1st - 15th
If you want a mix of towering evergreens and vibrant fall foliage, Vivian Park is the place to be. Nestled a few miles up Provo Canyon, this location offers a perfect balance of autumn colors and year-round greenery. It’s also conveniently located if you want to explore nearby spots like Big Springs or the Great Western Trailhead. Last season, we visited late in October and it still looked fantastic—so don’t worry if you’re running a bit behind the peak season.
5. Tibble Fork Reservoir
~September 27th - October 2nd
Tibble Fork is a classic go-to for photographers year-round, but it truly shines in the fall. The contrast between the stunning reservoir and the vibrant fall colors make for breathtaking photos. Be prepared, though—this location can get busy, especially on weekends, so plan to arrive early and give yourself some extra time to get that perfect shot.
No matter where you go, Utah Valley’s fall colors will leave you in awe. With these prime locations and the right timing, you’re sure to capture some unforgettable moments. Pack your camera, plan your visit, and enjoy the beauty of fall!
