Luminaria Natalie Ockey

Luminaria is one of the most popular holiday activities in Utah! The light displays are amazing. We love that you really feel immersed right into the experience since you walk right through the lights. It is definitely worth spending an evening enjoying Luminaria as a family. This has become one of our family’s dearest traditions.

Luminaria is a light display at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. The 50 acres of Ashton Gardens are covered in lights. There is a large light hill where the lights change colors and dance to music. There are larger than life ornaments and snowmen, and the trees are covered in lights. It is quite an amazing sight.

We have visited Luminariai every year since it opened, so we have learned a lot over the years. Here are a few tips to make your visit more enjoyable.

1. The path is paved

This makes visiting accessible for everyone. Bring a stroller, a wagon, a wheelchair and walk the gardens all lit up together. It is a long walk–about a mile. There are no golf carts to rent during this event, but Thanksgiving Point has a limited amount of electric scooters, wheelchairs and strollers/wagons to rent if you are in need.

2. Dress for the weather.

It can be pleasantly chilly or bitter cold. You will be outside for most of this event, so you will want to make sure you are prepared. Beanies and gloves are the most important to keep heads and hands warm. If it has been snowing, the paths will be clear, but you might appreciate boots for warmth.

3. Walk the Light of the World display.

This adds a few more steps to your visit, but the statues are amazing. The entire Light the World display are statues of Jesus Christ lit by lanterns. We walk slowly through and talk about the stories from the New Testament. It is a nice addition to the colorful lights of Luminaria.

4. Food

Our boys always ask for water when we visit Luminaria because we are bundled up, so we recommend bringing water bottles. There is an area about halfway through the Luminaria walk where you can purchase yummy treats. They have hot chocolate and apple cider, mini donuts, pretzels, and more. They do have food punch cards that you can purchase, which will save you a few dollars. If you know you are going to buy treats, make sure to check and see if it’s worth it to buy the punch card for your family.

5. Add-ons

There are special add-ons where you can rent a firepit or an enclosed igloo. We have never enjoyed either of these, but many families have made this a part of their tradition. If you want to extend the evening and have places to get extra warm, check out these extra additions.

6. Best time to go

We like to go around 5:30 pm. The sun has just gone down, so it isn’t super cold, but it is dark enough to enjoy the lights. It’s also early in the evening so you get done before bedtime. In addition, the closer you get to Christmas, the busier Luminaria gets, so you may want to go early in the season. Luminaria opens mid November, so consider going earlier in November.

7. Buy tickets in October

The best way to save on tickets is to purchase them on the October sale. Every October, Thanksgiving Point sells Luminaria tickets at a discount. Mark your calendars and plan on purchasing during this sale. Another way to save is to go to Luminaria with someone who has a Thanksgiving Point membership. They are able to get 50% off tickets, so if you go with your neighbor who has a membership, you can save on your tickets, too.

8. Don’t Miss the Fire and Ice Show

Near the end of the Luminaria by the waterfall area in Ashton Gardens, there is an awesome show. Make sure you stop and wait in this area until the show begins. It usually runs every 15-20 minutes. Don’t miss it, because the fire and water dance together to the music. We love watching this show together as a family.

9. Scavenger Hunt

There is usually a little scavenger hunt for the kids to complete, and they can earn a sticker. We love working on this together as a family. Look for the hidden letters to complete the secret message. Pick up the scavenger hunt paper when you arrive, and turn it in at the front desk on your way out.

10. Take your time and have fun.

Once you are inside Luminaria, take your time. You are in no rush to get out at a certain time. We like to slowly walk through the lights and enjoy ourselves. There are interactive activities for kids, so plan time to let them play and have fun. Luminaria is also full of photo opportunities, so bring your phone and your smiles. We usually spend at least two hours on our visit.

We hope that you love Luminaria as much as we do. It feels magical!
