If you're looking for a scenic drive that delivers waterfall hikes, alpine lakes, jaw-dropping overlooks, and some of the best stargazing in the state, Payson Canyon and the Nebo Loop are calling your name.
Here's everything you need to know before you go.
Grotto Falls
Grotto Falls
Start your canyon adventure with a quick win. Grotto Falls is an easy, family-friendly hike just off the main canyon road that rewards you with a pretty waterfall tucked into the trees.
The trail is about 1.5 miles out and back with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for most fitness levels and great for kids. You'll follow a gentle path through pine and aspen before the canyon narrows and the falls come into view. The waterfall flows strongest in late spring and early summer when snowmelt is feeding the creek, so timing your visit between May and July gets you the best show.
A few things to know before you go: the trailhead has limited parking, so arriving early on weekends is a good move. Bring water, wear layers since canyon temps can shift quickly, and keep an eye out for wildflowers along the trail in early summer. Dogs are welcome on leash.
It's short enough that you can knock it out in under an hour and still have plenty of day left for the rest of the canyon.
Payson Lakes
A little further up the road, Payson Lakes is one of those spots locals love for good reason. The reservoir sits at elevation surrounded by pine and aspen, making it a go-to for fishing, picnicking, and soaking up mountain views on a summer afternoon. It's peaceful, it's pretty, and it doesn't require a big commitment to enjoy.
Payson Lakes Campground
Want to turn this into an overnight? Payson Lakes Campground puts you right in the middle of it. Waking up to mountain air with the lake nearby is hard to beat, and the campground's elevation keeps things cooler even in the heat of summer. Book ahead on Recreation.gov since sites fill up fast on summer weekends.
The Nebo Loop + Overlooks
The Nebo Loop Scenic Byway is the main event. This 38-mile drive winds through the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and past the highest peak in the Wasatch Range, Mount Nebo, which tops out at 11,928 feet. Pull off at the overlooks along the route for sweeping views of Utah Valley and the canyon below.
The overlooks also happen to be prime stargazing territory. The elevation and distance from city lights make for clear, dark skies, so if you can time a visit around a new moon, you'll get a show.
Devil's Kitchen
Near the southern end of the loop, Devil's Kitchen is one of the more unexpected sights on the drive. Erosion has carved the red and orange clay formations into something that looks straight out of southern Utah, which makes it feel like a surprise bonus at the end of the road. It's a short walk from the pullout and absolutely worth the stop.
Plan Your Visit
Payson Canyon is located about 15 miles southeast of Payson along Highway 6 to Nebo Loop Road. The full Nebo Loop connects Payson to Nephi and can be driven as a one-way scenic route if you want to skip the backtrack.
Most of the canyon is accessible from late spring through early fall depending on snowpack. Check current road conditions before heading out, especially early in the season.
