PROVO, UT: The Covey Center, in conjunction with Excellence in the Community are pleased to welcome Lark & Spur to the Covey stage December 22, 2015 at 7:30pm. As the name suggestions, Lark & Spur began as a duo when Lori Decker and Jeff Whiteley first performed in the streets, Metro tunnels and public squares of Paris, Annecy and other French cities. Those early street performances were recorded and later broadcast on French radio. Lark & Spur has appeared on radio and television in France. The first instrumentation was acoustic, guitar, mandolin and two voices.
Over the years Lark & Spur continued to perform in France, adding other musicians. Now a sextet, the line up includes Lori Decker on mandolin, tin whistle and vocals; Jeff Whiteley on guitar and vocals; Stephen Keen on piano and accordion; Rich Dixon on guitar, Alicia Wrigley on bass and vocals, and Jay Lawrence on percussion. The repertoire is wide ranging, from French cabaret songs, to French and Celtic folk songs, to gypsy swing, and jazz standards. Lark & Spur is also known for its holiday program of traditional and modern carols. Performance credits include the Passiflore restaurant near Paris, the Montreux, Deauville, and Brienz Jazz Festivals in Europe; performances for the Utah Symphony; regular performances at the Stein Erickson Lodge in Deer Valley, and at the River Horse in Park City. The group has three recordings and close over 5 million hits on youtube. For an idea of what to expect, check out a video on youtube: http://eic.covey.center
Excellence in the Community grew out of Jeff Whiteley's experiences as a street musician in Paris. Founded in 2005, Excellence in the Community is a nonprofit organization based on the premise that Utah's best musicians and dancers represent a powerful resource for bringing people together and enhancing communities. Since their first event in 2005 they have presented over 300 concerts. Since moving to the Gallivan Center in December 2011, all of their concerts have been offered free to the public. Recently, concerts were extended to Utah Valley through the Covey Center for the Arts. With a focus on quality musicianship and a great diversity of musical styles, their concerts appeal to a broad range of age groups, including families with young children.
