Brigham Young University, home of the Cougars, is diverse in culture with students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 115 countries. BYU of Provo, Utah provides higher education to over 30,000 part-time and full-time students each year. The “Y” mountain can be seen by visitors entering the Utah Valley and acts as a beacon guiding them to BYU’s campus, nestled in the heart of Provo at the base of the Wasatch Mountains. Mount Timpanogos and Utah Lake contribute to the beautiful scenery that surrounds campus.


Although BYU educates thousands of students, the University also offers many opportunities for the community and visitors from around the world to enjoy. Museums, libraries, competitive nationally ranked sports teams and performing arts are all available for you to partake in and experience. In U.S. News and World Report "America's Best Colleges" issue 2002, BYU received high marks in several divisions.

BYU was opened in 1875 as Brigham Young Academy and officially became Brigham Young University in 1903. The University is a private institution sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

BYU offers bachelor’s degrees in 186 academic programs, master's degrees in 64, doctorates in 25 and juris doctorates in one. There are courses offered in 10 colleges, in Continuing Education and Graduate Studies and in three general undergraduate areas of study.

Come and cheer on the Cougars! BYU has 19 intercollegiate sports teams. The Cougars are members of the NCAA Mountain West Conference and hold 10 NCAA National Championship Titles. There are sports for everyone to enjoy, so come experience true blue fans and maybe become a fan yourself.

BYU is known for their magnificent music, theatre, dance and performing arts productions. Come watch these talented artists in the Harris Fine Arts Center. The University has 16 talented performing groups which provide a diversity of styles, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The University has five different museums available for the community and visitors to engage in. They each have their own unique characteristics and are free. Learn about dinosaurs and reptiles or engulf yourself in the art exhibits from around the world.

BYU has four libraries available for the public to utilize. Over 3 million volumes can be searched through. Make sure to allow enough time to browse through the second-largest LDS Family History Library and learn a little about your ancestors.

Enjoy gazing at the stars? Come and learn about astronomy topics such as planets and galaxies. The planetarium puts on weekend shows for the public for $2 per ticket.

Hungry? BYU offers an array of different dining locations to fit the needs of everyone in your family. There are nine dining locations on campus available for students and the public. The options are very diverse. There is bound to be something for everyone to enjoy.
